History of Sawston Hall
This is the Tudor mansion, owned by the Huddleston Family between the 16th century and 1970s. Friends to Queen Mary Tudor, in the 1500s the Hall played a part in royal intrigue. Mary set off to London on request of John Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland, in 1553. His intentions were speculated to have led Mary to her death.
Mary took refuge ion Sawston Hall and was protected by the Huddleston family after she was warned that on her arrival to London she would be killed or imprisoned. After receiving a message that stated the Duke’s men were on their way, she fled and looked back to see the Sawston Hall in flames.
John Dudley and Lady Jane Grey were executed in 1553 and 1554 respectively, after Mary was crowned Queen. The Huddleston’s remained Catholic even though the majority of the country was Protestant.
